News & Celebrations

Chinese Culture Day was held on Friday, 8 May

The event was opened by His Excellency the Governor of Tasmania, Peter Underwood and attended by Mr Weilian Shen, Chinese Consul General, Chinese Culture Day was a celebration of the relationship between Australia and China.

The Friends’ School welcomed visitors from Jin Yuan Senior School, our sister school in Shanghai.

This was a return visit as Jin Yuan Senior School has hosted several visits of Friends’ staff and students on trips to China in recent years.

The Chinese community in Tasmania supported Culture Day by conducting workshops in Chinese cultural activities, provided traditional Chinese dishes for a food fair and rounded out the day with a Dragon Parade.

Workshop activities included Chinese cinema, Chinese stage play, Chinese music, Mulan fan dancing, acrobatics, lion dancing, Chinese board games, Chinese poetry, silk & Chinese clothing, Chinese customs, Chinese caves, Chinese mathematics, Chinese history, Chinese astrology, Chinese Cooking and, of course Table Tennis!

Culture Day was opened at 9:30am at an assembly of students, staff and parents featuring musical pieces presented by Hobart College, Friends’ and Jin Yuan students.

Jun Yi Ma, Concertmaster for the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, and Anne Kim, gifted  Friends’ piano teacher and performer, presented two pieces for violin and piano.

The workshops were spread across both campuses of the School. There were great opportunities to see Chinese and Australian culture mixing over traditional Chinese activities.
